Cover art for a music album: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=…The idea was to give the place a sense of desolation, but nothing extreme like nuclear postapocalypse (therefore no, it’s not Fo:E related, I am sorry).
I probably overdid it a bit with setting the mood too dark. Or not?

I imagine that this is the aftermath of a long chain of events spanning centuries that leave the once prosperous kingdom of Equestria little more than a ghost of its former self. The Princesses are gone following in the steps of its former residents. Twilight herself stayed behind to try and resurrect the kingdom, albeit to no avail. With friendship now little more than a memory, she becomes a recluse. Over time the solitude and lack of companions slowly drive her mad, transforming her into a monster. She still wanders the castle halls to this day.

Um alright, I hadn’t seen the rubble underneath the slope of Canterlot before. This of course makes the “under construction” rather than “broken down” interpretation of mine less valid.

Maybe it isn’t postapocalyptic at all. Maybe we are seeing the early beginning of Canterlot and Ponyville. While this would clash with the idea of Ponyville being founded within the living memory of Granny Smith, perhaps there was another village before or something like this.
In any case I don’t necessarily see only an end but possibly also a beginning in this… which come to think of this is also my sentiment about generation 4’s conclusion and the prospect of generation 5 in a nutshell.
However that may be, this painting is really beautifully done.
