They used to, but when leadership changed, generations were tossed. Now it is “continuities.” For example, transformers now has G1 continuity, aligned continuity, Bay continuity, BumbleBee movie continuity, Cyberverse continuity, and Rescue Bots. With MLP, we have FiM, Comics, Manga, EQG and now Ponylife.  
Long explanation short, future content doesnt abide by the old strict rules. You’ll see a new cast of characters alongside current characters, with storytelling dictated by what makes a good show, not a good generation.

Hasbro has actually used Generations oficially? I mean, some fandom-related sites (and Doblaje Wiki, the wikia for Latin American Spanish dubs) use that but I haven’t seen it in any official site. And I just know that if the movie gets a spin-off series after that (and quite likely it will), it’ll follow the same path as Tangled and Big Hero 6 (transitioning from CGI to 2D).

True, though I would stress that while the G5 nickname is convenient, Hasbro has not done anything to indicate it will be a new generation, and has already dropped the generations idea from all other franchises. It’s probably a stand alone movie, like they mentioned.  
Though, do you think the reason they are not offering a series to go with the movie is about the movie being CG? Making a profit off a 2d movie is a no-brainer, but a CGI MLP movie will probably cost more than the first movie MADE.
