Yeah, there were other failed Atari games too. Not to mention Colecovision and such had bad ones too.

They had some good games too. Even by today’s standards, some are just as good as a good Mario Party minigame.

I still can’t believe that urban legend was true.

Granted, as AVGN said, it may or may not necessarrily be the worst game, it depends on whom you ask, and unlike some bad games, is actually beatable. (There are some, so unfinished they can’t be beaten without cheating/hacking.)

In fairness, old “cash grab” licensed games that are good did exist back then, and today.

Capcom’s old Disney games, and Konami’s TMNT/Simpsons games were quite good.
And Wayforward and DotEmu make great licensed games.

I dunno, I think Super Mario Bros. & Duck Hunt revolutionized home gaming more then those PC games did. (And were way more fun then Pong, or King’s Quest.) Besides, the PC and home console game markets are kinda different, and had different audiences, and such. (Most PCs in the ‘80s couldn’t even run/emulate Mario back then.) Not every home had or could afford a PC, so the NES helped bring home gaming into the mainstream.

Also, PC gaming wouldn’t be what it is today without console and arcade games helping it, or influencing gaming too, so the “PC Master race” stuff is bumpkis.

I do feel ET is a perfect example of what was wrong with gaming at the time. And even today. Quick license cash grabs rushed through development and shovelled out the door. It might not have caused the crash all by itself, but you could not have asked for a better scapegoat.

People like to blame ET as the sole cause of the Crash of ‘83, but Atari Pac-Man was just as responsible. But market saturation was more to blame than any single bad game.

Also, people often credit Nintendo for single-handedly saving video gaming and resurrecting the industry, but if you’ll pardon a Glorious PC Master Race, PC games were still going strong during and after the implosion of the home console market. King’s Quest, Police Quest, Zork, Ultima, countless Broderbund, MECC and Learning Company classics, etc.
