Also the main reason why people associated salamanders with fire, in case you really must know, is because they tend to hibernate either inside or in between logs. Hence, people would accidentally disturb their sleep by starting fires. The salamanders managed to get out alright, thankfully, and this lead to the conclusion that they seem to walk from the heart of the fire entirely unscathed.

When people of the past set logs on fire for warmth, sometimes a salamander would be slumbering inside. The fire would then wake up the salamander and the poor bastard would get the hell outta there. The ancient people, being the masters of the deduction that they were, would come to the conclusion that the fire birthed the salamander, and so salamanders would be associated with fire for generations to come.
