Wasn’t twice – he was faking his death in the Crystal Empire to trick the Mane 6 into revealing the Tree of Harmony. (And I did find myself thinking that out of all the villains, he was uniquely equipped to pull off a deception like that, what with his shadowy incorporeal form, so it’s pretty cool the writers did it.)

Seems he really died for real this time. First off, the death animation is completely different, his body was literally ripped apart brutally. Secondly and most importantly, Grogar wanted Sombra to serve under him in case he fails. He failed but Grogar talked like as if he can’t bring Sombra back anymore, i.e., death
