Story in the Source
. This is an ongoing storyline - context is important. While Twilight Sparkle tried to understand what her most recent dream meant to her >>1953426 (suggestive) another pony was pondering similar questions in my Equestria dreamscape.
The late afternoon sun was throwing long shadows across the ground as Applebloom trotted up to the farmhouse. Her afternoon chores were finally done and now she needed to clean up before dinner. The farmhouse and the surrounding countryside was aglow with yellow, orange and deep violet shadows from the setting sun, but the buttercream yellow filly paid it little attention. Her mind was on something else.
Ever since her recent dream rendezvous with Princess Luna and Stone Mane the filly had been pondering what seemed to be conflicting feelings in her mind. She cared deeply for the colt and just being with him had made her feel like she was dancing on a rainbow. But if that was so why had she gotten so angry at him? Look back on it now, she wasn’t even sure why they’d stared yelling at each other?
Entering through the mud room the filly took a moment to scrub her hooves off in the wash basin before she entered the house proper. With her hooves now presentable she stepped into the kitchen. Granny Smith was there preparing supper. Although the years made Granny move at a slower pace Applebloom was always amazed at how much work the elder matron of the family could accomplish in the kitchen. She always seemed to have the right ingredient ready to go in the pot or oven just when it was needed, and while she never seemed to move at a pace faster than a mosey an entire meal would seem to appear like magic on the dining room table. The entire family helped in the kitchen, but everypony agreed that Granny Smith was the undisputed ruler of it.
The apple green mare looked away from the pot she was tending. “Hey ya there squirt! Are ya chore all dun?”
“Yeah Granny they are. Ya need any help here?”
“Well if ya could peel them carrots there on the counter fer me that a be great. I’ll be a needing them in a minute er two.”
Applebloom picked a knife and began quietly peeling the vegetables. After a minute or so the mare spoke. “Yur being rather quiet there lil one. Something on yer mind ya want ta talk about?”
The filly finished the last carrot and stared down at it. “Granny why do we git angry at ponies sometimes when they are the same ponies we like a lot?”
The mare stirred the pot for a moment. “Well it can be fer several reasons. Why are ya angry at particular pony? Is this yer brother or sister, or is it one of yer CMC friends?”
The filly wiped the blade of the knife clean and then returned it to the drawer. “No it’s Stone Mane. Princess Luna resumed our lessons last night, and I was so happy ta see him. But I got very angry with him at the end of the lesson.”
The mare raised an eyebrow as she looked over at the filly. “Why didcha git angry at him?”
“Well, uh, um, we were playing a game and I did something ta him. It wasn’t anything mean and I didn’t hurt him, but he got all weird and then he got angry at me. Then I got angry at him. And looking back at it I don’t know why I did?”
Granny took the carrots and started dicing them up. After a couple of seconds she spoke again. “Well now. That could all depend what ya did. Care ta tell me whatcha did ta the colt?”
Applebloom blushed and began intently wiping down the wooden countertop. “Well uh, um, ya see we were flying around play this game of tag and well….”
Over the next minute or so the filly retold as best she could the events of the previous evening
For her part the matriarch remained silent and continued to dice the carrots. With the last carrot done she scooped them up with the edge of the cleaver and dumped them in the soup pot. With that accomplished she looked back at her granddaughter.
“Applebloom I want ya ta listen ta me very carefully. I’d be willing ta bet a bushel of blackberries that the reason Stone Mane got all riled up is becuz he cares fer ya a lot, and in return ya got bent out a shape becuz ya care fer him as much.”
The filly looked befuddled. “Then why did we git angry? I don’t understand?”
“Becuz what that colt thinks of ya matters a lot to ya. Ya care about that dontcha?”
“Well ya! I care what thinks. He’s a friend of mine, and he likes me fer helping him, and I think he’s special and…”
The matriarch looked at her with a knowing smile. “And ya luv him dontcha? That’s why ya sent that photo of ya and that doll ta him isn’t it?”
The filly’s face went bright red and she bowed her head. “Um, uh well. Maybe. Uh, I don’t know. I’ve never cared fer a pony like this before. I mean like this. I care a lot about ya Granny, and I care very much for sis and my brother, and my friends mean the world ta me. But this, this feels. Well, different. I can’t explain it.”
Setting the lid on the pot the mare slowly reached over and draped a front leg around the filly. “Applebloom.” She said softly. “Ya may not realize it but yer slowly growing up and becoming a mare. This is just further proof of that.”
Filly looked up. “But how can that be when I don’t even have my cutie mark?” She glanced back at her blank flank. “I thought I would git it longer before I’d be worrying about stuff like this!”
Granny chuckled. “Oh squirt yer gonna discover that lots of things in life happen when ya least expect them ta! That’s why we should treasure the time we have with the ones we care so much about.”
The filly pondered Granny’s words. “So what happened is a normal fer ponies ta experience, and I shouldn’t be bothered by it?”
“Well now I didn’t exactly say that. I think ya might want ta slow down stoking this here fire ya got burning. Ya two have built up a fine head of steam. Ya don’t need ta git this train going any faster than its already going?”
Applebloom cocked her head to one side causing the red bow in her mane to flop to one side. “Uh Granny what does trains have ta do with Stone Mane and I?”
The mare smiled. “What I’m gitting at is don’t be in a hurry ta move things along between ya two! There will be time fer that later. Ya two are jumping a couple of chapters ahead in the book.”
Applebloom nodded her head. Although she was still uncertain what trains and books had to do with her and Stone Mane, but Granny seemed to think it was important.
To be continued.
