Spike’s story is quite a tragedy, right after the invasion of Dark Dust, little baby Dragon Spike was the first one to see Twilight after she got corrupted by the Darkness, to see his beloved Twilight turned into a monster with no respect for life crushed Spike in a way none could even imagine. Even with her corruption, Twilight said to Spike that she would spare him and would let him go, perhaps the connection between both was something so strong that even the darkness could not corrupt it, however the idea of living without Twilight was something Spike could not even think on standing for, so he decided to stay with Twilight and allowed the Darkness to engulf him and twist him, he would never leave Twilight, he would stay with her forever, no matter the conditions.
 
The Darkness turned Spike into a titanic, brutal, blood thirsty Dragon beast with a devastating power, however, again the connection between Twilight and Spike somehow outstand the power of the Darkness as Spike is loyal to Twilight, not to Dark Dust, and even when Twilight is devoted to the dark alicorn, Spike had expressed several times how he thinks Twilight should be the one ruling over Equestria, not Dark Dust.
 
Spike is a most vicious, savage & violent guardian over Twilight, anyone who dares to offend her or stand against her will be slaughter by the furious Dragon. In order to get to Twilight, Lauren will have to pass Spike first.
