Description: The gun was a new invention shortly before the outbreak of the war, disdained by the aristocracy; but the normal pony took to it readily, none more so than the settlers of the south who had more than a few things to practice against. After the first shots, and as soon as armaments went into mass production frontier adventurers came to the call to arms and formed small groups of lightly armored, long ranged skirmishers and rangers delighting in showing off their skills at the early rifle as cultivated by many a late evening taking aim at over ripened apples or varmints. While not all came from Appleoosa, the particular notoriety of the Apple-clan early raiders became the classification these quasi-official war parties came to assume.
