It’s because of inertia… When your face hits the ground, friction and pressure try to stop it’s momentum, but your flank has nothing to act on it except for the rest of your body, which is flexible… So logically, when you hit the ground at an angle greater than 45 degrees, your flank’s forward momentum won’t be canceled out by the ground, only slowed as your body’s springiness tries to force it back to place.
 
While you might like it, it poses a serious threat to the pony’s spine, as the pressure applied to their spine could break it and lead to serious spinal damage.

Why aren’t they pointing and laughing? It’s just Scootaloo.
 
Also I like how a pony’s plot flies up in the air when they smash into the ground face first.

Pegasi are well adapted to having their face crashing into stuff. Her face is just doing what it’s evolved to do.

Definitely a nice picture though. I’ve had some sledding trips like that myself (although in my case the stop was usually my running into a tree).

It makes sense. It just edges towards the uncanny valley through unfamiliarity.

Also dang, seems the color profiles got screwed up, its all Desaturated. Make sure to go to source to see it better. (I remember a Derpibooru mod gave me excellent research on why this happens, I need to relocate it)
