I might be alone on this but I find the progression of their frinedship over the past 4 seasons to be truly heartwarming.
Starlight went from…
Starlight went from…
- Hating Twilight
- Feeling nervous and unsure around Twilight (Having a strictly Teacher-Student relationship with her.)
- Becoming a genuine friend of Twilight
- Becoming BFF’s (they pretty much have a sisterly bond with each other, they have fun together while occasionally pissing each other off, like family). They have lived together for so long now that I doubt Twilight would ever willingly want Starlight to leave.

Very nice comment.
I also like how Starlight wasn’t fully defeated, and wasn’t actually physically overpowered/dominated.
She based herself on a particular worldview and grudge and managed to actually change her mind and believe what Twilight showed her. A remarkable achievement.

Yeah, if we take care to separate redemption and reformation, with Sunset we saw a big chunk of her path to redemption, as she struggled to gain the students’ trust and forgive herself and all that, and with Starlight we get prolonged reformation, as she slowly unlearns her old understanding of what was good and what was bad. Similarly, with Sunset the reformation is effectively skipped with the whole “laser beam heel-face turn” thing, and with Starlight arguably the redemption is skipped because everyone forgives her right away and gives her a chance.
Personally, considering previous precedent and the setting, I don’t find ponies giving Starlight a second chance right away to be strange, but I can’t excuse or ignore Sunset’s total personality switch (and subsequent rather bland personality, but that’s getting finally swayed with the increasing showings of her irritability, at least - Forgotten Friendship and Rollercoaster both did a good job with it).
Also, I find redemption much less interesting than reformation in stories, so I prefer Starlight by far.
I think the problem people usually forget is that Sunset stays around people she wronged and is constantly as a reminder of what she did. It could have easily avoided if she went to a different school. Discounting the Mane 6 Starlight is in a place where no pony even knows who she is and only visited her old villge a year after every pony else had time to get over it.
Well said, I agree on Sunset and aside from some shorts, Rainbow Rocks and Forgotten Friendship, the only reason I even bother with EqG is mainly because of her, but she’s actually starting to become way too perfect for my tastes, and it’s a real shame.
@Supes
I consider Sunset’s turnaround to the good side to be one of the worst in the series for this very reason, but her actual path to redemption was handled well enough, the laser thing still bothers me to this day though.
Sunset is only believable because you see her get so much crap from other people and had to face an uphill struggle convincing others. She’s your typical underdog hero. She’s believable because she’s gone through all the steps you’d expect her to go through, and doing things you’d expect her to do.
What I disapprove of Sunset though, is how perfect she is. She was perfectly written to have the viewers’s approvals AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, because she has to carry Equestria Girls on her shoulder. That’s why she’s such a perfect mix of sexy and sweet, cool and nerdy, rockstar and geeky such that she’s obviously brony-bait. Also, nothing’s rarely ever her fault.
Starlight’s believable IF you see her as a recovering addict with major mental health issues. Everybody being nice and accommodating and forgiving to her is appropriate. Addicts and ppl with self-esteem issues NEED an environment where they can be tolerated, and slowly guided towards the right path to recovery. Equestria, is a model example of a safe space for healing damaged people.
Starlight is also Twilight’s first and biggest undertaking during her career as a princess. She’s her project, proof of concept and doctorate dissertation. IF Twilight could make someone like Starlight into a formidable ally AND best friend, just by being friendly, forgiving, and NICE to her at all times, then that’s a HUGE win for Friendship.
Twilight probably got that idea from Fluttershy though, because she did it first.
In what world is getting hit by a laser and instantly changing your entire personality “the most believable”? Starlight IS by far the most believable because she kept struggling with it (Discord is a special case because he’s an actual spirit of chaos and there’s not a good way to relate to whatever might be going in his head).
Edited
Sunset is the most believable. Discord is the most believable, but his constant betrayals are far more accurate too if you freed a criminal. And because there were consequences and Discord had to work hard to prove he changed, his reformation was slow and organic.
Starlight pulls the same crap Discord does and it’s a quirk, not a fault worth scolding for.
Starlight is also pretty and makes a great wifu. She has a cute mane and smiles a lot. You can pity her sweet face when she says ‘oh, whoopsies, I accidentally made a fully conscious decision to brain-wash my friends’.
Reminds me of someone… oh, right!
[Tooncritic] ‘Whoops, accidentally made the full, conscious effort to groom then cybersexed a teenager’.
Rushed reformation is complete bs. Every other reformed villian has had a faster one then her. Starlight was the most believable one.
No. They do not agree on that. Ever body loves Starlight. Only fools like you don’t.
LOL what? most people had issue mainly with her rushed reformation or whatever you want to call it (and later the mind control). Her interaction and friendship with Twilight is one of the most organic in the series, so I really doubt that’s even reason for ‘most hate’.
…I don’t…
Besides, I don’t dwell on it. She and Twi good friends now, and their friendships have been consistently developing at a pace that I find comfortable.
Twilight likes having Starlight around and Starlight wants to be around, that’s the important thing for me.
