Wouldn’t call it widely accepted, but certainly widely known. Personally I don’t accept it, but I respect the artist’s choice to use it.

The artist didn’t screw anything up, this was a deliberate stylistic choice. This project began years before that episode ever aired and the artist had already decided on the pink mane and made it a part of the story being told. Once the episode aired, the decision was made to keep that part of the story as it was.

I think this scene was better than the official version. In the series Celestia faces Luna with the elements almost like an old west gunfight. Here Celestia uses the elements desperately, like grabbing any weapon she could and only afterward realizing what she did.
