I know, I mean, they’re often used as excuse to make edgy scary characters, but in truth they come off as cheap villains, specially when people are more interested in how demented they are while ignoring other aspecs. In fact, a lot of them comes off as uninteresting because they’re more often serial killers instead of magnificent bastards.

I’m kind of a history nerd, thought the first independent years are not my thing, I should learn a bit more, I just got the Santa Anna thing by investigating again. I knew he didn’t spend that much time as president but I didn’t remember how many periods he had as ruler.

First question. Are you Mexican? Second question. He is long gone, so there is no excuse to keep doing things the way he, or others did. The past should not define the future for worse. So, no. His impact was not as big as that of modern people refusing to grow out of that phase of idiocy and instead digging deeper into it.

Santa Anna was one of the worst monsters of the modern era; he may not have the body count of Hitler or Stalin, but he destroyed Mexico for a hundred generations by ushering in a culture of top-down corruption that’s still keeping it from achieving its true potential as a great world power. Before he took control Mexico was going through the same birthing pains as any other post-colonial country and had the same real chance at greatness as the rest of the New World, but he single-handedly ruined all of that and paved the way for every self-serving crook and scumbag and traitor and would-be tyrant who followed.
 
Others may have been worse human beings– certainly there were conquistadores as monstrously evil as any Nazi, just as the USA had Andrew Jackson– but none had such a lasting negative impact. Houston should have let his men tear the bastard limb from limb at San Jacinto.

Trust me, Aztec usually overshadow olmecs, toltecs, the city of Teotihuacan, Tlaxcala, Totonacs, but the mayans are more or less safe by being recognized as well.  
Not that it matters that much, outside of the gods I must admit I’m not exactly the most enthusiast regarding prehispanic cultures. Mexico’s history turns interestng from the Spanish conquest onwards for me.
 
And trust me, our historical figures are far more complex than they look, outside of Victoriano Huerta (and trust me I made a fucking effort trying to find his good side, and I did found it, he was a family man at least in one text, but yeah he doesn’t have a lot) none of our historical figures are clearcut, but mexicans have the nasty habits of making just heroes and villains but oh no, you can’t have actual people as historical figures. Now I know what Groundskeeper Willie feels regarding other scots.
 
By the way, Santa Anna was president 11 times in all the history, but in overall time he was only six years, he never lasted that much. I should study that part of Mexico because the first independent years are a huge chaos.
