like i said, they are inteligent (at least the twilight one seems very smart), they can feel, they have shown fear, and pretty much behave like every other living being.  
they also had some kind of personality and character.  
that is also why the twilight one is a villain fav in the fandom at the moment.  
they not appear like a soulless puppet to me.  
so i think it is too easy to say “its just wood” or “its just magic”, when they shown us nearly half an hour that they are indeed very lively.

Well they didn’t seem to be in pain, plus its questionable if they were even really alive. All of them except mean Twilight seemed to be a one-dimensional being incapable of going five seconds without exhibiting the single personality trait they seemed slaves to. As others have noted, they seemed to have a similar lack of personhood as the Pinkie clones from the Mirror Pool. Perhaps they could have grown more complex, but we don’t know.
 
In any event, the tree was defending itself as much as enacting judgement. We can’t fault it when we don’t even know what level of sapience it possesses or if it was even consciously destroying the Mean Six. For all we know its “thoughts” may have simply been: “evil magic masquerading as the chosen ones is trying to attune to me, must drain/destroy said magic” and the Mean Six turning back into wood was more a consequence of the nature of the spell that brought them to life rather than an intention on the tree’s part.

I agree, I’m not saying that the movie sucks or anything and as a matter of fact I think that movie is a masterpiece. But think about how many controversy the episode would have faced with the leaked version.
