The myth about mice eating cheese is caused by Medieval Europeans hanging their meats. With the meat out of reach, this only left cheese and grain for starving mice to eat. With grain, it’s harder to tell if its been tampered with (except in those cases where mice relieved themselves in it), but with cheese, you get nice big chunks missing. Hence the myth about rodents liking cheese.

That being said, mice are grain eaters. I’ve never seen one eat cheese (mainly because in the modern era people keep it in the refrigerator.) I do know that mice like Fig Newtons and hamsters like Doritos.
