Its a debit card. Its your own money and not money lended to you by employers and bosses. Its your own money, so if you manage the information, you’re safe because usually debit cards hold what you wish to deposit on them.

I have to in order to be independent. I’ve been unemployed for years now and I have very little confidence in myself about holding down a job. There’s also the fact that I have a binge eating problem and I would easily pig out if I ever had the opportunity.

This. I was about to update my comment saying something very similar.

You know that if you’re adult or a young adult, you can easily open a personal bank account, with a minimum deposit in most Banks, right? I opened one a few years ago, now i have a debit card aside from the one of my Job at a restaurant.  
Try to inform yourself about the banks on your area, and probably you’ll find one that you can use to manage your own money, without giving explanations to anybody.
