Not just a hope, though - we have had cute moments with them and in a place where you see your worst fears in Sombra’s castle what he saw was her not needing him anymore, and he totally got jealous when Twi got more help in the form of a certain owl, so he actually values the ‘number one assistant’ role a lot.
 
(I know, that’s not all the way to saying that a mother/son relationship is canon. But some pretty dark interpretations of their relationship get talked about as fact despite the onscreen evidence going pretty far in the opposite direction. That they do love each other is not in our heads!)

Best friends/siblings sounds good. Either way, with how much of an antisocial shut in as Twilight was as a kid, I doubt responsible ponies like her parents or the princess would entrust raising a baby dragon to a little kid like that. It just wouldn’t be healthy for Spike. Even without her social problems, allowing a little kid like Twilight was when Spike hatched to raise a baby on top of her schoolwork just seems like too much.
 
Faust said she always wanted to establish Celestia ss the one who raised Spike. Faust is gone, though, and her canon never got established so we can all make our own conclusions. I choose to headcanon Twi’s parents did the work of raising Spike while Twi and Shining Armor were in school. I don’t have a real problem with twimom headcanoners but I just don’t see how it would work.

I feel like you’re over-thinking this. Spike is a little boy. The only character who we’ve seen who he could cuddle up with like this is Twilight… she’s the closest thing he’ll ever have to a mom, as imperfect a descriptor as it may be for their relationship. Yes, that’s sad. That’s what TwiMom/Spike is, though… a hope that there’s something in their relationship for Spike above his secretarial/janitorial role in her life.

The fact that she was quite literally a child at the time he was hatched, in addition to Twilight having living parents herself says otherwise.
 
I would call shenanigans if they outright stated Twilight raised Spike, because it’s kind of a dick move to make her raise a child on her own in her pre-adolescent to teenage years, on top of being a dedicated student at Princess Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns, wouldn’t you say?
 
That, and Spike outright stated the words “you’re not mommy” regarding Twilight in an episode.
 
Granted, they are very close to each other, and certainly consider each other as family. (Once Upon a Zeppelin outright stated that)

It’s been with the fandom since the earliest days. It’s based on Twilight being the only mare in the series who could conceivably hold the role of mother in Spike’s life, and since he’s still a child it would be nice if he actually had one.

One of the comics (Hearths Warming one) had Twilight recall her time spent raising Spike as if she were his mother.
