Short answer: Read the comic (Ponytale).
 
Actual answer: In this universe, the crusaders (and a fourth pony called T-Bone) are actually sisters with unique powers. They were taken from their mom and given to random families to keep them safe (also, something about inheriting the Elements of Harmony). Their mother is also the most irresponsible witch (with a capital B) that I’ve heard of, using them for personal gain and vanishing for days, weeks, maybe months or years at a time, and mistreating them while she’s there. For some reason, Apple Bloom wants to find their mother, and sent Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle out to find her, by asking Rarity, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, and Fluttershy. Also, Pinkie’s dead because Scootaloo found out about Cupcakes, and Rainbow’s mad at Scootaloo over it. Also, they’re immortal or something.

I take it, we’ll never see Rarity.
