Well, it’s still true that the Storm King have ruled, destroyed, and conquered the entire kingdom of Equestria throughout this entire movie and the Crystal Ponies were absent in the film because they were captured and/or enslaved by the Storm King just like what King Sombra did because history has been repeated by itself. But this time, it was different because another Crystal Princess has been petrified into a statue while her subjects were captured and/or enslaved by the Storm King and his minions. Unless their would have been an extended edition to the film to feature scenes from Equestria to Beyond Equestria and back.
I watch the movie very carefully, the crystal ponies were absent in, and it’s only Canterlot being conquered by the Storm King and he would have conquered the rest of Equestria if he hadn’t betrayed Tempest after she gave him what he wanted to activate the staff with stolen alicorn magic but left Tempest with nothing in return about restoring her horn and outlive her usefulness by trying to kill her which allow Twilight to save her.
Yea, and Discord was probably the jester of the town.
Wait a minute. So speaking of which, the Crystal Ponies of the Crystal Empire have become crystal slaves of the Storm King. Right? First Sombra, and now the Storm King.

Let me rephrase: I didn’t really see any evidence that there was much direction given once they arrived, nor much planned in advance with regards to movements, troop positions, where to cut off an enemy’s escape route, etc.
I will give Tempest her due on a couple other fronts, though. She’s a very competent tracker, and she’s clearly at least serviceable, and probably more, as an interrogator.

That makes sense, but in that case it would be Sunset that she shares the problem with, and Sunset’s been more successful in overcoming it than Starlight. So it’s still worth considering why she’s received poorly by comparison, but that’s for another thread since it no longer concerns Tempest.
If Tempest’s horn is an excuse to commit high treason, Scootaloo should have at least made it up to shoplifting by now. :P
Starlight at least started out meaning well, in her own misguided way. She thought she was making a better world, which was why she was so devoted to her warped vision of unity, and presumably why she went so much further off the deep end after her “paradise” was liberated. Tempest had no such illusions. She was willing to sell out her whole species just to be pointy again, and indications are this isn’t her first rodeo. She basically comes right out and says that expecting anyone else to care if you live or die, or doing the same for them, is irredeemably foolish, and that those who do so have invited onto themselves any misfortune they may suffer. And, well, she just generally enjoys beating people up. So regardless of your opinion on motives, I think it’s safe to say Tempest turned a significant amount eviller.
As for motives, I identify more with “I’m psychologically unbalanced and miss my only friend” than I do with “I want my hand back so I can punch people with it” (figuratively speaking). Maybe it’s just because I’m crazy and alone. But hey, at least I’m not trying to punch you.
That’s a fair point, but I would argue that Tempest being a capable commander can still be inferred from what we see. The only people who could have planned the invasion out were either her or the Storm King, and, well, the Storm King didn’t really strike me as being one for planning.
As a comparison, take Celestia. We never really see her rule or administer Equestria – some bits of daily life in “A Royal Problem” were the most we got in that regard – but it’s still a reasonable assumption to make that Celestia is a skilled peacetime ruler and that she does a good job of running and administering her country. We just don’t see that stuff because there’s no narrative reason to show it.
I’d also agree with @thps48. I feel that a large part of the Starlight hate has less to do with what she did as a villain and more with her admittedly badly written redemption scene. I do think that how a former villain’s redemption moment was received has a greater impact on the fandom’s reaction to them than their actual deeds as a villain – Discord, for instance, did objectively much more terrible things than either Starlight or Tempest, but he has no real hatedom to speak of.
Tempest’s reasons to turn evil were less stupid, I’d have thought. XD
Yeah. I’m just surprised that by and large, nobody seems to bear Tempest any similar animosity. Not even a vocal minority.

She got what came to her two years ago (mostly in prawn). Most are over it, but well, we all know the term “vocal minority” by now, yeah? >w<
Any time the movie played her up as a threat, it was based on either her physical abilities or her outright cruelty. Her ability to command is not presented as a reason to fear her.
Aside from that, though, fair enough… Except we never see her actually strategize either. There’s no real indication that the assault on Canterlot was planned out beyond scheduling and supplies, and those petrifier smoke bombs made more of a difference than anything else; presumably those can be used by anyone. She fails to provide her commander with sufficient information on the plans in motion, to the point where he doesn’t seem to understand things that were ostensibly his idea, though this may admittedly have more to do with the Storm King’s shortcomings than with hers. And her capture of Twilight seems to involve just suddenly being there, with nopony seeing the blimp and neither Twilight nor Spike saw its shadow as it took position above them, having one of her brutes on the ground already to grab Spike, at which point she drops a cage on Twilight (which requires it have no bottom) and pulls her up to the blimp in it (which requires it to have a bottom); I’m not going to assign any meaning to this sequence of events until I can get it to make sense to me. So you’ll forgive me for not having thought of her in terms of leadership without your prompting.

True, but the last guy who did that was also a villain with deliberately limited character whom no-one in the audience had any particular reason to care about beyond a point, whereas Tempest was deliberately intended to be someone the audience would, by the end, like and sympathize with.
And most of the fics I’ve come across do point that out, anyway.

I’m not sure how important that is, to be quite honest. A character’s competence and threat level depend on more than their physical strength and abilities. Yes, Tempest isn’t more, physically, than a competent fighter, but it’s her ability to do what she does with her fleet and her army that makes her remarkable. To continue that example, if you were to put Rarity in Tempest’s place, in charge of the same armada, storm guards and invasion, she wouldn’t have been able to do what Temepst did or do it as efficiently, because Tempest has skills and knowledge and experience Rarity, or the rest of the main cast for that matter, does not. There’s being a good mage or warrior, and then there’s being a good general, and these are separate things.
To me, it’s like asking “What’s so special about Alexander the Great or Caesar or Napoleon? Without their armies and their empires and their resources they were just some guys who could use a weapon. You can say that about any of their soldiers.” Yes, certainly, but it’s their skill as statesmen and generals and organizers that made them famous and successful, not their physical prowess.
Yeah, I have no idea what the hell was going on, but the entirety of Equestria was apparently way off their game. On a good day, in a fair fight, I’m not sure Tempest would be able to take the CMC, let alone the Mane 6. Without her blimp and her magic smoke bombs and her giant badger guys, she’s nothing special. So she knows some fancy kicks. Big deal. You could say that about Rarity.

After what Tempest did not just to nameless extras, but to ponies we’ve known and loved since season one (Not just Lyra, but the spa twins, Derpy, the CMC, and probably more I’m missing), it’s really amazing nobody in this fandom wants to talk about her basically owing her fucking life to Twilight’s mercy at this point.
