Actually, there was a lot of variation among the teenage dragons Spike fell in with. The animators were cutting corners in the flight scene here by reusing assets.

I suppose you could come up with an in-world explanation like dragons lose their distinctive body shapes as they grow older, but I’d just chalk it up to time and budget and hoping no one notices.
