Me on Memebase, circa July 2011:
“WTF is this My Little Pony shit?” Reads about it on KYM (or something. I don’t really remember)
Hmmm… Watches first 3 eps on youtube Gets hooked, mind stuck on ponies 24/7 since then. yay
I think I first noticed it in early ‘11 on the Serebii forums, someone had a banner for the MLP:FiM fan club, I had thought it was strange, but I didn’t put much thought into it untill a few months later, I had started seeing references and screen caps with jokes, and then I played story of the blanks on newgrounds, at that point I HAD to see it for myself
I got sucked in via parodies (such as the PONY.MOV series, Friendship is Witchcraft, Mentally Advanced Series, and later on, Rainbow Dash Presents) and the music by artists like General Mumbles and JackleApp.
Though I did watch My Little Pony: The Movie when I was younger, I primarily remembered The Smooze out of all of that.

Yes, the community is awesome, diverse and has produced some of the best creative content I’ve ever seen, but that doesn’t answer the question of why I keep coming back to it.
I mean, the subject matter is ponies. What makes them so special? I don’t really care for horses/ponies to be honest, but why do I like any of this stuff?
I grew up in an age of First-Person shooters, sports and action shows/movies, and I loved it. Then, in 2012, a sudden and unexpected shift to ponies. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
Not that I’m complaining, but you can see how this has turned my world upside down!
Yeah, I used to think MLP was stupid as well. Then I started liking all of the memes and fanfiction. And then I watched one of the episodes, Secret of my Excess. I loved it, and now I’m a brony. I still don’t collect figures or merchandise, though, and hopefully never will.
I don’t remember where I heard of it, but I do remember how I started watching. I just sat down, found the first three episodes on Youtube and watched them all back to back. I always give any new series I start watching a three-episode test to see if I want to continue watching. I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy them, so I ended up catching up on Youtube and just watching the series as it aired.
I remember watching Dan Vs. on the website on the Hub’s website, and the tumbnail for Winter Wrap Up, and I watched and later watched the first two episodes on YT and the rest…that’s history.
I actually just found a site called FOB Equestria that has military bronies in every branch and found out there are like 4 bronies that use that site and are on my base, we are hanging out tomorrow :D (just kinda trying to help proove your point i guess:T)

I think it’s not just about the show itself that’s appealing, but the community it has. It’s amazing how tight-knit we are compared to other fandoms. We come from all walks of life and have a common interest. From teens in high school to people in the marines, we’re pretty diverse.
I like the show before i knew about bronies … back in early to mid 2011ish
my little cousins (5 and 2 year old girls) were watching it and i was like “wow this rocks”
my uncle kind of said “really” but he likes fluttershy since he watches it with them … now i’m their favourite cousin and i’m seeing them this holiday season -
