Although they are capable of higher thought and what-not they are, at least in their current state, still nothing more than doppelgangers single-mindedly focused on fun…of course I’m sure they could become their own independent ponies if giving time to mature and learn.

Something even worse to think about: What if that isn’t fear, but guilt? What if it came to the realization that if it wins, it will be killing the other and real Pinkie Pie. What if it struggled with that thought before throwing the test so the real Pinkie could live?

It doesn’t matter, how they were created, basically they were newborns with Pinkie’s traits, they only lacked her knoweledge and experience. So, in short, Twilight massacred a bunch of foals, and she enjoyed it.
