Starlight thought literally reliving her childhood would help her re-connect with Sunburst, but Sunburst wasn’t comfortable with that. It seems that Sunburst still needs to understand that Starlight is still pretty broken inside.

Sunburst was pretty insensitive about it too. He already knows how Starlight is so excited to spend time with him but he keeps droning on about other ponies. I could’ve sworn he figured this out at the beginning of the episode with Twilight when he told Starlight “you don’t need to pretend to like any of this” but he kept doing it anyway with Trixie and later with Maud.
