I question how much of a role /mlp/ has played in keeping the show alive post-alicornification, considering all the evidence I’ve seen points to /mlp/’s general opinion of the show since then to be roughly equal to “Teen Titans Go!”, not to mention /mlp/’s, ah, non-conformist behavior in general, which seems calculated to make bronies as unappealing as possible to outsiders.

Pretty much. Youtube was the big conduit back in 2010 and was probably where most people discovered the show.

The contributions people on 4chan have made to the fandom and therefore indirectly to the show are significant and really shouldn’t be written off, but that’s not to say that other places and people didn’t make significant contributions as well.

/mlp/ likes to give 4chan all the credit for the fandom but completely forget how important Youtube and the community on there was in the beginning.

I’m a regular /mlp/ tard but I know for a fact that 4chan really didn’t have much to do with the show’s early success. Back when I first heard about it during season 1 I didn’t even go there. If there is one good thing to say about 4chan is that it has been helping in keeping the fandom alive during the past few years and especially after season 3.

This is 4CHAN FIRST!!1! nonsense is dumber than the rocks in Bon Bon’s cider, every time it comes up. 4chan did not invent the fandom, /mlp/ is just so far up its own ass that it simply cannot conceive of a universe which doesn’t have /mlp/ at its center. Friendship Is Magic had everything going for it, every level of its conception and production was top notch and perfectly aligned to take advantage of not only the explosion of social media saturation that began in 2010-2011, but the wave of internet culture anti-cynicism which was the predictable and inevitable backlash against the artfully jaded cynicism of The EBaum/SomethingAwful Years, which was itself a backlash against the artificial kumbayah death of cynicism bullshit of the post-9/11 internet.
 
Everyone I know who is (or was) into the show was either one of the millions of MLP fans who were already there when channers wandered in and acted like they made that, or saw clips of Season 1’s brilliant musical numbers on Youtube, or followed Faust/Strong/Renzetti/et al from their earlier work, or were Transformers/G.I. Joe fans who “What the hell?“ed an episode or two on The Hub, or just cartoon fans in general and some combination thereof. 4chan was absolutely not necessary.

You know, it’s funny… I’ve loved the show since early 2011, and I became curious about it for reasons that had nothing to do with 4chan, started watching it for reasons that had nothing to do with 4chan, kept watching it for reasons that had nothing to do with 4chan, and enjoy/watch it to this day for reasons that have had nothing to do with 4chan. Or any of the garbage that flows out of the supposed “fans” on 4chan.
 
I mean, to be fair. There were a number of fans of the show on 4chan in its first season too. But I seem to remember the site kicking a large number of them out too, so… yeah. Really selling the importance there.

One friendship lesson I’ve learned from this fandom is that the vast majority of complaints about soapboxes are quite clearly coming from people whose only real objection is the brand of soap.
