As far as I can tell, no one really expects you to eat them at all, at least not in the US. It’s just an amusing novelty in place of “my grandma visited <a place with scorpions> and all I got was this lousy T-shirt”.
Of course, there actually are places in the world where bugs are routinely eaten, often much less pleasingly presented.
