Ruby greets all three of them with a hello.
“Good to see you safe and sound, dear.” Barber says from her couch. Barber was a slightly older mare with a stern expression and tone of voice that never quite left her, even when she was in a good mood.
“Yeah, who’d make the food and clean if I wasn’t here?” Ruby comments with a wry grin.
“Hey, where’d that box go you were hauling out of that veritable mansion?” Rat says, circling around the filly. Rat was a tall, lanky stallion that would probably be pretty decent looking were it not for his large buck teeth. It made him hard to take seriously, but Ruby knew not to make him angry. He was by far the sneakiest of his roommates, and Ruby knew from some stories that he wasn’t above hurting those that crossed him. Unlike her other roommates, Ruby couldn’t recall Rat ever holding down a job.
Ruby, who knew she wouldn’t be able to fence the good without Barber or Rat hearing about it, says that she was worried about walking around with the box and so stashed it away so she could get it later.
“Good thinking.” Sleepy says, wandering up, “That is of course, unless someone else finds it first.”
Sleepy was a squatter, portly stallion with a mustache. Ruby knew that he would on occasion work on the docks, though she didn’t know what he did, and the work usually had a very sporadic schedule. He was quite good with lockpicks and at pickpocketing.
“Atta girl, Atta girl! We’ll go grab it tomorrow.” Rat says, laughing and giving Ruby a noogie, which she struggles out of before heading over to the kitchen.
As Ruby grabbed some nearby bread she pondered how she didn’t know the real names of her roommates. Rat and Sleepy’s nicknames were pretty obvious from their appearances. Barber took a while for her to figure out however. The filly thought it was from all the blades she would carry around, which was half true. It seems, among other things she would do for the sailors on the docks, she cut hair.
