Opinions are made to be shared and thought about. If I had an undying passion for plain brown OCs for reasons beyond “I just like them”, then I would be interested in why you have such a dislike for them, but I agree with you they are pretty boring. I’m not trying to convince you or anyone else to stop enjoying what you like, but to think about what you like logically and determine whether or not they are good/bad. Opinions are to be discussed and reconsidered. Hiding away from every different opinion is a poor way to think
@WitchTaunter
Opinions are not objective. I could say how I see zero merit in plain brown OCs, but no one actually cares about that and I bet some people out here only enjoy them, I can’t say anyone is wrong..
@LightningBolt
It’s all subjective, but it kinda helps whenever you can make long post explaining in detail why you consider it objectively bad/good and not just say “I like it so meh”.
@WitchTaunter
And edgy and detailed doesn’t mean instantly poorly made, nor does simple and dull mean well made by default. But good and bad design is always subjective.
@LightningBolt
I agree, make what makes you happy, but just because it makes you happy doesn’t mean it is well made and I think it is important to acknowledge that. Distinguish between “I like it”, and “I think it is well-made”. They call it guilty pleasures.
And if five-winged, twenty foot tall, rainbow zebra-alicorn bat ponies become a trend like edgy OCs have, don’t be surprised if I have complaints about the quality from the fandom as of late.
@WitchTaunter
A bit tl;dr, but here’s some backstory on me:
I don’t care for brown OCs, brown in OCs is fine, as a primary or secondary, but entirely is boring and uninteresting to me.
I like edgy/emo things, a lot, I’d say it’s my gimmick, so I’m rather tolerable and forgiving to all of that.
I value creativity and creator enjoyment over what anyone else thinks. If the creator/artist loves their five-winged, twenty foot tall, rainbow zebra-alicorn bat pony, then more power to to them.
All in all, I have an unpopular opinion, and that is fine.
@LightningBolt
I have no idea who “Backy” is, but from a google search I can only assume you mean the OC from the “Ask Backy” tumblr. I have no idea where you are coming from, maybe it’s because I don’t use Derpibooru frequently, I mean I literally just made this account, but recolors are indeed very uncreative and they are mainly used by people who can’t design an original hairstyle or color scheme. They are bad too, but not as bad as edgy OCs. The problem that I was mainly addressing in this comic I made was that people who create edgy OCs aren’t just creating a laughably over-serious cartoon horse from a show for little girls that doesn’t in any way meld with the world they are in and just looks silly, but they are trying to characterize an OC purely by their appearance. They are focusing so hard on the “original” in “original character”. Because we aren’t reading a fanfic about them or watching a show about them to understand the OC all the “character” is put into the appearance while also trying to be “original”. They add bizarre features that stand way out from anything in the canon so that their character stands out in the crowd. Adding a broken horn is the creator’s way of making the character look battle-worn, tough, or abused, all traits that don’t mix with the MLP world, which is why we haven’t seen it in the show until now, and why people don’t like it. Characters don’t need to have a broken horn, or two different color eyes, or robot wings, or even clothing to be interesting and well-made. The artist just needs to know what they are doing and know not to go crazy and not be too lacking, which is why I say that both recolors and edgy ocs come from a place of lack of creativity.
@WitchTaunter
I can only assume with how much people with bash on almost any OC that isn’t a direct copy of a background pony. Backy is a pretty dull design, for an example. So many OCs look just like that. I fail to see how that’s at all more acceptable and tolerable than giving one oc a broken horn or wing.
@LightningBolt
I have never seen anybody create dull and boring OCs as an attempt to “counter” edgy OC creation. If that is a thing, then I’m with you, that is unbelievably stupid and pointless. Edgy OCs are created from a lack of imagination/creativity and creating OCs that are equally uncreative for different reasons isn’t fixing anything.
@WitchTaunter
I’m tired of the breadth of boring, dull, brown OCs that come out of the counter movement against ‘edgy’ OCs, that’s not really any better.
Yeah the broken horn isn’t a good sing. But non so far has beaten King Sombra when it comes to edginess and nowadays a lot of people actually seem to like him as a villain. So there’s still hope for that character despite the look.
