Some also just didn’t care, and just wrote for it to make a living. That was a common problem with ‘80s animation, (Despite how much I love it) which is what lead to inconsistencies.
 
I remember Perry Martin, a writer of the “Super Mario Super Show” admitted he never played a video game before, and knew squat about Mario before writing. (Aside from the writer’s bible & information they provided.)  
The only person (as far as we know) whom worked on that show that liked the video games, and wanted to stay true to them was producer Andy Heyward.

They were an “item” as much as two characters could be on a show like Tales. Blue Ribbon Blues (the episode this screen cap is from) and Happy Birthday Sweetheart IMO show that. Though yes it, like a lot of things on this show, seemed to more or less be depending on the writer.
