What I like to imagine happened:  
She was wandering Equestria, building her hoard and “asking” ponies for “spare” treasures. One day, she knocked at a door and the family living there was like: “You want Treasure? Fine, you can have him! About time he gets out of the house… Now leave us alone!”  
When asked about their first meeting, she always says that love hit her “like a frightened stallion thrown out of a 2nd story window”…
