Oh, I agree that those majors are ridiculous. If you take an art degree, or other such degree, you should major in one of the STEM fields as well.

Actually, I’m not joking. The most popular majors are things like psychology, fine arts, and liberal arts - fluff degrees with no practical use. It isn’t a lack of education that’s the problem, it’s the lack of jobs. The jobs themselves don’t exist.
 
Also, increasing taxes is more complex than “oh we just take more”, taxation has its own side effects. For example, pushing struggling families into destitution. “Well just take it from the rich instead”, they’re already paying the lion’s share of the taxes.
 
Not only that, but education is already one of the biggest sectors of public spending already, and public schools are still failing, because the answer isn’t in throwing more money at it. The answer is in giving people a reason to value education instead of hedonism.
 
Furthermore, why should taxpayers be extorted even further to fund someone else’s Women’s Studies or Puppetry degree?
 
If everyone goes to college, then who’s working?

Let me rephrase my point. If you go to college, you have more potential to do great things. If you don’t go to college, you have the potential to do great things, but not nearly as much. It’s good to have a chunk of people not go to college because the menial labor jobs do need workers. But the way you hive back to soeciety can either be small and replaceable, or slightly less small and a bit less replaceable.
 
However, pretty soon all menial labor jobs will be obsolete. Maybe two or three decades. So by then you either go to college, or you’d be jobless. It’s going to happen sooner that you might think. AGI is coming. Then ASI. And when that happens, even college won’t help you get a job.

bluntly put, no. if everyone becomes educated, then there’s no one left to do menial labor. which is kind of a shit way of looking at things, but that’s just how things are.

I think higher education should be free or steeply discounted but not everyone should go to college. If everyone went to college, college would have no value just like a high school education has no value because it’s a given that everyone graduated high school. Why would an employer be impressed with a degree when there are 100 other candidates with the same degree? There is too much emphasis on college and not enough on trades. When I was in high school nobody even talked about trades. We were told that the only way to be successful in life is to get a four year degree from a prestigious university and that’s just not true.

You’re joking, right? They aren’t “these people” they are EVERYONE who wants a good job. So, in reality, it’s the people who don’t go to college who aren’t giving back to society as much as they could in this scenario. Also, an increase in taxes is worth it so people don’t have to be crippled in student debt for most of their adult life. And if everyone goes to college, since it would be ‘free’, it would be well worth it.

Except for the fact that… you know, it isn’t free.
 
Also, what’s to stop people just going to college for their entire lives so they never have to work? When do these people finally give back to society?

Maybe if college wasn’t an expensive daycare I would be slightly more okay with this. As it is, I’m not paying for people to go party away from Mommy and Daddy.

Only because many of us find the idea of funding useless liberal arts degrees to be appalling.
 
Personally, I like the idea of subsidized trade schools. We need plumbers and welders a lot more than we need philosophers.
