dream on!
A small loan of a million bits from his father.
Oh that’s right my Grandpa told me about that once; yeah, you have every right to be pissed off.
I wasn’t talking a presidential election, I was talking the way they brought legalized gambling into Pennsylvania/the Lehigh Valley, promising that it would bring in tons of cash and everyone’s problems would be solved. Guess what? It didn’t happen.
(Warning: I’ll be getting a little ranty from this point, folks).
The vote held to bring gambling in seem kinda wonky too. Every poll held beforehand showed that a large majority of citizens were against it, yet somehow it passed with a massive majority. It was one of the biggest voter turnouts in years, some would say suspiciously so.
The Bethlehem police chief, who’d started out as a cop in a casino town out west, warned local pols that they’d need ten times as many officers to handle things when the casinos opened. Their response was that “That won’t be a problem here, because reasons”. And when the crime rate spiked the way they’d been warned? “Well, someone should have told us!”
The arrangement was that the MILLIONS AND MILLIONS in casino tax revenue would only be spent on smaller towns. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Harrisburg would never see a dime, it would all be spent on the towns that needed the money. Schools and public libraries would have more funds than they’d ever seen. Civic improvement would be astounding. Everyone would eat strawberries and cream forever. Blah-blah-blah.
Hey, they promised and everything!
When the casinos opened? We learned that the projected profits for the next twenty years had already been spent by Harrisburg and Philly.
And then the recession hit and the casinos weren’t making the money they were ‘supposed’ to make. So it’ll be more like 30-40 years before any of the smaller towns get the money they were promised. But hey, this time the pols totally mean it. For realsies!
The whole thing still makes me furious.
I remember that topic from years ago but I forget which Presidential election it was; maybe 2008?
Fix’d! ;)
Yeah, between the lines, he’s not being a jerk, he just thinks he can offer Ponyville more. No animosity towards Mayor Mare.
Nothing he’s saying is particularly unkind here.
But I do think the idea of a big business man being reasonable is too much for them to keep up for very long.
