So just to clarify, your only defense for this is that Twilight has done the same thing?
Do you honestly feel that Twilight would mind-control her own friends if she were in the same state of mind that Starlight is in now?
I mean, just look at how smug Starlight is after she’s made her little monkeys do exactly what she wanted them to do. There are no signs of stress. There are no signs of conflict. There are no signs of her saying to herself on the inside: “Gee, maybe I shouldn’t be doing this after all…”
She’s proud of herself.
Starlight possesses a mind that is CLEARLY not fit for any developed society. What’s more, given how controversial Starlight’s inclusion has been among the fandom, you would honestly think the writers would endeavor to give Starlight more moments of POSITIVE interaction with the Remane 5. But instead, she’s mind-controlling them….
Yeah, that’s really what I want to see from the soon-to-be hero of the finale….
As much as this aggravates me to see Starlight doing this (since all it does is make me want the old glim glim back even more), I however can see some very interesting (and twisted and lewd) clop/grimdark material coming out of this scene alone. LOL
@bigladiesman @thatoneguy Cogere and persuadere can each mean at least two different things regarding their respective lemmata, besides being present active infinitives (“to compel”/“to persuade”) and verbal nouns, depending on what conjugation they refer to. If, for instance, persuadere is second-person future passive indicative, it would mean “you are persuaded”; if it’s second-person present passive imperative, it would mean “(you) be persuaded!”
Either case is irrelevant anyway, since persuadere is singular, and here Starlight is talking to a group. The plural is persuademini – “you (plural) are persuaded” or “be persuaded! (plural)”
Fiducia does mean “trust, confidence, reliance,” etc.
*compelus doesn’t exist. The ungeminated L alone sticks out like a sore thumb.
*cogeria also doesn’t exist. I figure somebody among the production crew knows Spanish though.
A more accurate Latin version for the spell’s name and/or invocation would be Fiducia compellatur, “May trust be compelled!”
Even if we take into account that Starlight seems to be mentally going through different loose terms so as to remember what does her spell lack, this is on the whole clearly takes after the typical, Harry Potter-esque approach to Latin as a magical language. The Modern Italian phonetics gives it away.
Mind you, I’m not a Latin expert, let alone a professional. Just a random enthusiast. It’s likely that I’ve made some mistakes, but I’m confident enough to I’m correct on this.
Also: cogito, “I think” or “I ponder”, is a different verb from cogo, “to collect, to assemble, to force, to urge”, the difference being the frequentative suffix “-ito”.
@kztxl7
The difference is in how the ponies handled themselves and whether or not they felt bad for what they did. We don’t know the entire context of what’s going on here, but so far, Starlight doesn’t seem to be either emotionally unbalanced right now or consider anything wrong with what she’s doing. Maybe you don’t consider that important, I don’t know. But to others, that distinction is important.
@Spinny
You’re downplaying Twilight Sparkle’s screw-up while massively doing the opposite for Starlight Glimmer.
There is no justification for what Twilight did, period.
There is also no difference between what Twilight did and Starlight did. Twilight could’ve easily sent a message to her very understanding mentor who she has years of relationship with but didn’t because of some ridiculous fears she made up.
You’re also completely overlooking the fact that Starlight, much like Twilight when she first got to Ponyville is someone who is decades behind on friendship and is now learning about this.
Starlight a psychopath. Now you’re just being ridiculous and if that’s the case, lock up Twilight alongside her.
I’ve been pretty neutral on Starlight, but she has shown signs of possibly regressing both in her joking about mind control and using that “motor mouth” spell on Big Mac in “No Second Prances”. Still I’m eager to see how this plays out and especially how Twilight reprimands her.
I hope the episode isn’t entirely consisting of Starlight making a fool out of herself. I mean it would be one thing if Applejack made a fool out of herself, but that’s because Applejack is well-liked as a character. With Starlight, even though I myself like her and think she is utterly adorable, there are a lot of people out there that don’t like her because of the fact she got off scot-free for almost destroying equestria and also for the bullshit excuse of not having any friends. All I hope is that Starlight is shown to have some competency and that the whole episode isn’t nothing but her manipulating her friends.
Hahahaha! Starlight is at her best when she plays the anti-Sunset.
Sunset integrates into the mane 6 independent of Twilight.
Starlight does not integrate with the mane 6 and she is dependent on Twilight.
Those two totally should meet.
As of right now I like Starlight best because I too, am a socialy awkward, generally unapproachable weirdo who only has like…three real friends. Making new friends make me nervous as hell and I end up creeping them out.
I think that this was a spell Twilight had that she intentionally didn’t show Starlight. Or maybe it’s a spell that was mentioned in her studies. It needs a decent context for me to accept Starlight’s use of it.
You know, I don’t think there’s much justification for Twilight’s actions either.
I’m just saying that there’s a VERY CLEAR difference between the “absolute last resort” Twilight of Lesson Zero and the “could clearly just ask, but thinks mind control is a better option” Starlight here.
Also, is this really what I want to see from a character who is about to get the bulk of the focus in the finale, which is only about four weeks from now? Oh, and so much for the notion that she’s a friend to the mane five, because if she really cared about them like a friend, she would not feel the need to do this to them.
Starlight is a psychopath with absolutely no regard for the feelings of others, and it’s plainly obvious that she needs to be locked up.
@thatguy
Thing is, Starlight has been shown to have massive issues herself. The idea of having to face Sunburst again sent her into a panic attack, with tunnel vision and nearly shutting down. So, the basis is there for a similar scenario. I’m curious if they’ll go that route.
