I recall, many didn't like that episode. Even Harry Shearer voice of Principal Skinner disliked it.
Personally, I felt the episode where Edna left Skinner hanging at the altar, (can't remember the name of it) and basically broke 'em up was worse. (The ship sinking wasn't the main thing that bothered me, but admittedly all those years building them up as a pair, and supposedly helping them become better people now feel wasted. Granted, doesn't matter now that they got rid of her, due to her VA unfortunately passing.)
The episode felt very mean-spirited to me, and Marge was downright nasty in it especially. (I understand she was mad at Homer for being a dork, but regardless, she came off much worse then he did. Especially, when she was trying to encourage Edna not to give Skinner another chance, just because she was mad at Homer.)
I know Skinner is a bit of a "weiner" (classic Simpsons ref') but I genuinely felt sorry for him in the ep', and he didn't really do anything in it to deserve being treated so badly.
Only good thing about the ep' was that series creator Matt Groening guest starred briefly.
There had been a few "jumping the shark" eps before that, but that episode alone was the one where I stopped watching the show regularly I hated that one so much. It just felt too much like a downer to me.
