It was mostly a joke really.  
But then again now that you got me thinking about it… earth ponies seem to form the “social elite” in Equestria. Most of the famous, influential and rich ponies we’ve seen, are earth ponies. Then we have a couple unicorns and…. damn, pegasi are the true oppressed class! Sure there’s Wonderbolts but they mostly just perform to entertain others.

But, see, Earth ponies are the obviously oppressed class. They are literally inferior to unicorns in every aspect except one (Humans do not have a real life equivalence to this, so don’t think I’m making parallels).
