Those comics were themselves a reference to the infamous ending of the TV series St. Elsewhere, which ended exactly like that, complete with the snowglobe (and the “failing to understand what autism actually is” part, though to be fair it was the 80’s and people honestly DIDN’T really understand autism back then). In fact, I’m pretty sure the dialogue in those comics are pretty much word for word from that TV series.
