Eh, a certain episode by a certain happy-weather-related writer (unless I’m mixing the writers again _ ) had RD do that ages ago.  
Well, except it didn’t ‘culminate’ in the humiliation, that came mid-episode, but it’s a minor difference.  
But I definitively agree with there being a lot of ways to tie RD and Spike together :P  
One of the reasons I really loved the very few stories/pictures I’ve found of the two hanging out together - one even had Spike growing up with RD instead, and I felt it really showed how well they can compliment each other.  
Twilight might need her number one assistant to keep her sane (sure, he fails sometimes, but he is several years younger than her; The exact ages are hard to get, but he hatched when she got her cutie-mark and was trying to get into a private school; She’s got at least a half-dozen years on him), but RD could use a snarky younger brother to keep her from believing her own bravado (and he could use an older sibling giving him confidence and independence) - though I guess I’d rather have things as they are, even if it’s at those two’s expense.

Waiiiit a minute.
 
The episode was mostly Rainbow making desperate bids for emotional validation, ultimately culminating in a spectacular case of public humiliation…so was Rainbow trying to be the new Spike?
