Or C, someone lied about how old the town is, and its only 50-60 years old. Or D, the writers didn’t care.
Personally, my money’s on D.
Then again, the age of the town is likely just the reckoning of uneducated mudponies who can barely even count, let alone do fancy mathematics, you know, like AJ, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in the age they claim, when we where given evidence to the opposite, Grannysmith being around when the town was founded and all that. Thus, the logical assumption is that the town isn’t hundreds of years old, rather than assuming fantastical and unexplained abilities in everyone, simply because the latter flatters the character you happen to like.
@Lawful Girly
Precisely my interpretation of that famous ‘Twilight won’t outlive her friends’ twitter thing. Or at least the second one with the first being ‘it’s a kid’s show and that isn’t relevant at all so stop worrying about it’. I merely put up my post as a bit of dark humor comment for Applejack to say to the others in the moment.
@Ebonysdagger
That’s probably more likely. Actually! Come to think of it…major fan theory here…
What if being an Element of Harmony acts like being a Ringbearer in LotR? It makes you worthy of becoming immortal (by joining the Elves, in the latter case). After all, Celestia and Luna do mention in the semi-canon journal that they age at a different rate, but not how long they’ll live. And they’ve both wielded the Elements.
Heck, that would even make the statement a technical truth: Twilight won’t outlive her friends. Because they’ll all be immortal.
@Lawful Girly
I’ve seen nothing to indicate case B and even if A is true then Applejack, and indeed all the elements, are even more of a unique case than anyone else save for perhaps Luna and Celestia.
@Ebonysdagger
Are you sure that A) Granny Smith isn’t some sort of unique case, or B) more likely, it was actually her ancestor and everypony humors her?
@aerion111
If you mean that fanfic, nope. I was simply referring to the fact that the series has hinted at Granny Smith needing to be over two hundred years old for the time line to fit. If this is the case we can assume Applejack, suffused with more magical power than most unicorns will ever get thanks to the elements, will at least live that long easily.
@Ebonysdagger
Well, Earthponies are overpowered.
At least I’m assuming you’re referring to that :P
But, in their defense, no one does a ‘country’ imitation without it insulting their intelligence.
Heck, Earth Pony Farmers are hit by the idea twice; Earth Ponies were known to be dumb, and farming is generally considered something you do if you don’t have the intelligence for a ‘real’ job.
The truth doesn’t matter; Impressions are about seeming to fit, not actually fitting.
