There is something solid to hit: the framework around the base. If it wasn’t solid, the horse statue wouldn’t be supported. It’s that which Sunset was aiming for (albeit as a bluff)

The point is if the portal is active the hammer would pass straight through into Equestria.

After the Sunset Satan incident, with Principal Celestia and Vice Principal Luna aware of the significance of the statue (at least, I’m preeeetty sure they know about the portal) they should have at least had a gate erected around it to protect both worlds from one of their world’s inhabitants accidentally visiting the other and reusing the sledgehammer threat.

Like I said, after she got the crown, she flat out said she wasn’t really going to destroy the portal because she needed it.

Did she? I had the impression that she didn’t actually want to destroy it and was just bluffing. What with her not actually destroying it and throwing the hammer away, when it didn’t work.

It WAS active then, though. It didn’t deactivate until right after Twilight went home.

Even ignoring my explaination, don’t forget. She never intended to break the portal anyway. She explicitly said it was a bluff, because she needed the portal intact for her plan.

It’s such a bad movie that this was only like, the two dozenth issue I spotted.
 
Anyway, I can try to justify if I try really, really hard (which I shouldn’t be expected to!):
 
since the other side is a mirror, and the portal seems to be connected to the mirror, you could probably try to swing it through the portal and kinda sideways so that you hit the frame of the mirror, which would close the portal (I guess). Now, if Sunset already took note of where she’d have to hit on the way here and landed in the same spot as TS (hang on!), then she’d know how to do this even without seeing the portal at all. Bingo!
 
Oor they just didn’t want to bother with this scene too much. Or the portal is actually connected to the base of the statue because magic. Whatever.

It probably needs that smooth surface in tact to work. Destroy the corner, you destroy that surface, you destroy the portal.

I know that. I figured the statue would break, but the portal itself will be fine, unless it needs something to be projected on, like the mirror.
