I know, They put him in this role as the MC's right hand with grown up responsibilities but heavens forbid the kid having a pet onf his own.
I also remember that back then some people were spitting the ridiculous argument that Spike shouldn't have taken the bird home, because "he can't take animals just like that", yet have no qualms with Twilight doing the same with Owlicious or Pinkie having an aligator.
I mean, the circumstances around Spike and his reason to keep him were reasonable. And it's not like he took a manticore or a hydra.
Tsk, it makes me wish that one the current writers makes him randomly show up and make him stay. It's ridiculous.
