Hey, sports are dangerous.
“hey, let’s have an archery tournament!”
“yeah, except instead of just arrows we use ICE arrows!”
“buck yeah! they can freeze solid anything they hit, causing massive collateral!”
“you could take out the whole stadium with one of those things!”
…Actually, I can’t argue with that.
I don’t know what you’re referring to.
No, that’s not what cringe comedy is. You obviously don’t know how it works.
That is all irrelevant to my argument and it is based on a misunderstanding of what cringe comedy is. Don’t make the same mistake as Byter where he misused the word “slapstick”.
First off, there were no hazardous materials, secondly, the refs could be bribed, and third, you’re point about an attack is a nitpick that has nothing at all to do with the episode’s plot and doesn’t matter.
Yes, and it would have killed tons of ponies, and again, you’re nitpicking.
It is completely accurate. If he had done nothing, everyone would have been killed or seriously injured/
There is no need to be “trudging” through the events. Just because you find them unbearable does not mean they are objectively hard to watch.
You did not make that clear at all, and that’s not how pacing works. We judge based nonliteral time, and how much of the events we see affects our perception.
Just because YOU say the writing is sloppy does not mean that it is. You keep treating your opinions like objective fact and assuming that YOU know what writing was done, which you don’t.
Ok, not that’s bullshit. There was a very clear moral at the end of the episode. Spike said it in a letter to princess celestia.
Why would he tell starlight about it in a situation where it was irrelevant? What does that have to do with anything?
Ok, now you’re just hurling insults. You don’t seem to get that people screw up, and sometimes they screw up a lot.
There was only 3 “warmup” episodes, and the latter 2 of them were mostly dedicated to the stories of the ponies involved, rather than building them u. And again, spike only sang for less than a minute, and we saw plenty of the games.
I don’t see how that makes any sense. The song was only less than a minute, and there’s no way that it could be made shorter without seeming rushed. And your anger is not an excuse to make factual errors and bash the episode at every chance you get.
What does that have to do with the episode in the slightest? How does that affect the way he is treated? How is that relevant in any way?
Instead of giving valid points as to why YOU PERSONALLY think the episode is bad, you have been treating your opinions like fact, making illogical statements, and using things that are completely irrelevant to try and prove a point which the statements have nothing to do with. I see no reason to continue, as this will just continue to go nowhere, so don’t bother replying to me. If anyone else wants to continue this argument, feel free to do so.
Derpybooru’s format makes it difficult to quote.
Then I can say the same thing about shoving Twilight away from the door and we’re back to square one where I will simply say that Spike has never done anything worthwhile until this episode. (assist Ember in preventing Garble from becoming Dragon Lord)
No, it’s not. The laughter comes from the viewer cringing. Yes, there are times where something is “so bad it’s good”, but that is because a scene is meant to be serious or meant to be emotional and it just amounts to be something silly. When a scene is “look at this person get HUMILIATED and embarrassed! isn’t that funny?” it’s like someone is explaining the joke and waving a sign at me that says “laugh now!”, and I, for one, don’t laugh because someone is telling me to. If YOU like it, then I strongly suggest watching all the american pie movies.
Foreshadowing is one thing, this wasn’t it, it was the idiotball. Think about it: There are hazardous materials being used (obviously) and magic would be one of the few things to stop it, so where aren’t there a couple of ref unicorns who aren’t locked down? Why are even the princesses locked down? Apparently if anyone ever plans an attack, they just need to attack the games because all the unicorns AND PRINCESSES lock down their magic.
I’m not downplaying someone doing something positive, but the ice chunk would have destroyed the floor of the stadium, but he’s being praised for “Saving the crystal empire for the second time”, which is downright incorrect. Also, his act of heroism in the last minute or two is nor worth trudging through the rest of the events that take place.
I’m not talking literal time, I’m talking about in-universe time. The games were still going while he was there, but he’s in his room until they are wrapping everything up and the CMC pester him until he joins the closing ceremony.
I’m saying to look at the writing that was done and not to defend sloppy writing. As it is, there is no moral or even purpose too the episode other than to mention that “the equestria games happened”. Spike doesn’t even tell Starlight about it. It wasn’t showcasing anything other than spike not being able to do anything right for the kingdom that is proverbially drinking his dragon seeds any chance they get. And the games that are talked about, prepped for, and have several warmup episodes are largely ignored. The episode isn’t called “Spike sings bad”, it’s called “Equestria games”.
As I said, the quoting system in here is new to me. The song took far longer than it needed to and it sure FELT like 5 minutes. I haven’t had the stomach to sit and time it.
The aspect I was trying to say about different physiology and species is what should be the real “Chekov’s gun”. He’s a dragon, an odd dragon, even by other dragons. Where did his egg come from? We don’t know. For all we know, he’s a species of super dragon that’s only born once every 1,000 years and grants wishes when he grows up.
@Background Pony #AB98
I’ve been up performing on a stage in front of a hundred people and fucked up royally and I hate myself any time I remember it. Spike plays the most shallow role in the “saving” of the crystal empire. He pushes twilight aside, and then he falls into the same trap which requires Twilight to do the same to him. Huh, I guess twilight saved the crystal empire, going by that logic. Or perhaps you mean where twilight is caught in Sombra’s crystal trap, suddenly can’t teliport, and chucks the crystal heart to spike, who promptly falls off the whole castle, requiring Armor to Fastball Special Cadance to grab the heart, and by proxy, spike?
Yet THAT somehow means that Spike is the hero? At best, he was a cog in a sequence of events to ensure the kingdom was saved, yes, but one wonders why there isn’t a statue of Cadance or Twilight or Shining Armor, instead spike is on all of it.
Are you honestly implying that all of this makes perfect reasonable sense?
True, but that’s all he did.
So you’re dismissing an entire type of comedy because YOU personally don’t like it and assume everyone feels the same way? Do you even know anything about cringe comedy? It’s a good form of comedy.
Ever heard of chekhov’s gun? It’s a very common storytelling device. And it’s also reasonable to believe that they’d want to have magic disabled. And guess what? Bad things happen to people, and if they get to do something important, while it may not make up for the bad things that happen to them, it does deserve positive acknowledgement.
No, he was only in his room for less than a minute.
So now you’re telling me I’m not allowed to disagree with people and express said disagreement? You’re saying I’m not allowed to have my own opinion? You think that you are the person who gets to declare an episode bad or good, no questions asked? How very pretentious of you.
Are you not going to dress any of my other points? You said that the song took 5 minutes, which it did not, and you said that traits not related to his personality cause him to be treated differently by the show, among other things.
Edited
Spike was the only one who managed to find a way into the diamond dog burrows.
And cringe comedy is not true comedy, it’s not a laugh that any sensible person enjoys having.
Oh, and princess Cadance saved the crystal empire. Spike just fell off a balcony.
As soon as it was shown that all the unicorns were getting their magic locked down, it was obvious that was going to be the catalyst for something bad to happen, something that anyone else could have taken care of but “just so happened” no “not be able to” so that spike could do something that he’ll never do again, as if it makes up for the rest of the crap they put him through.
And yes, he was in his room for the remainder of the games until the CMC dragged him back out. Equestria games was a bad episode, don’t defend it.
Of course he would. He saved the crystal empire.
That was a joke, not a plot-point.
First off, the sequence didn’t even last a minute. Second, have you never heard of cringe comedy? Third, he wasn’t in his room for that long.
Do you even know what a plothole is? How do you “set up” a “plothole”? How do you see a plothole coming from a mile away? How could anyone predict the climax?
You did give a mostly accurate synopsis of the episode, but you got the times wrong and your conclusions don’t make sense.
How does any of that make anyone treat him differently? None of those are personality traits.
I will agree that he can often be an idiot, but I don’t think that applies here. And as far as I can tell, he wasn’t given the opportunity to be “quite smart” and “clever” until the end of the episode. And he was not that smart in “A dog and pony show”, that was rarity. Spike did almost nothing in that episode.
Spike gets greeted in the beginning and then suddenly, he is to light the torch. He can’t due to stage fright so twilight does it for him. He acts like a moron thereafter thinking that he can start fires with his mind. Then some games are over and the traditional singing of the hometown anthem, which he of course thinks ponyville won and says he’d gladly sing it, only for it to be cloudsdale, which he doesn’t know. Commence 5 min of awkward unfunny staring as spike mumbles jibberish in embarrassment, justifying his stage fright followed by him sticking to his room through the rest of everything until he’s needed for a massively set up plothole that was seen coming from a mile away. yes, all that happened.
And actually it’s not. See, while the plot dictates that the characters act like humans, spike has traits the other character’s don’t. Diet, the fact he has hands, breathes fire, these handful of facts mean he’s treated differently and different rules apply to him. However, the most notorious mistake made about him is his personality, many people make him an idiot or a “dumb kid”, when he’s quite smart and can be clever when given the opportunity (dog and pony show).
Umm, None of that happened in the episode.
What? That’s completely ridiculous.
inspiration manifestation usually springs to mind as a Rarity episode, but yes it’s a spike episode, and a good one.
And yes, if it means we didn’t see spike moping for the whole episode, failing to do anything at all, and a near 5 minute long sequence that only makes you laugh out of sheer embarrassment because it’s so pathetic, yes, I’d take seeing the sports over that.
The above episode, gauntlet of fire, was not bad, but I don’t expect spike focused episodes to normally BE good, because Spike is SO DIFFERENT from the other characters.
The simple fact that he’s a different species makes it different in the first place and when the writers forget what Spike is good at, we get trash like spike at your service.
Ok, that was uncalled for.
@Daneasaur
Are you still pissed that equestria games didn’t focus enough on sports and instead gave spike some much needed development? What about Inspiration Manifestation?
The I’ll bring up Discord, since his basis was to be a dragon pony hybrid, but they couldn’t find one in greek mythos.
Kirins aren’t genetic hybrids, and I haven’t seen a hippogriff yet.
We don’t know that, actually. Kirin and hippgriffs exist.
Well at least it would make more sense for Spike.
Guy’s a sucker for a pretty face, and this is the first one he can successfully procreate with.
RIGHT after that, we got dragon quest, which took all the good stuff about spike and threw it out the window.
And need I remind anyone about Just for Sidekicks, Equestria games, or (Luna forbid) Spike at your service, where the goal of all of them was to show “how much of a useless moron” spike is?
Not to mention that the random female dragon may just be for flavoring, but may turn into the next “flash sentry”, by that, I mean a character who has no character and suddenly a character we know a lot about is fawning over them.
I’m still gonna watch it to see if there is any chance of me being proven wrong, but I doubt it.
Edited because: Forgot something.
Oh, and just so you know, my personal opinion on this episode? It looks rad as fuck.
Oh, btw, I’m leaving the conversation now, so even if you reply, I won’t know. Feel free to bash me all you want, OP duckinator.
Irrelevant. Everyone produces crap at some point. MLP is no exception.
I don’t even watch the show, so how would I know? When it comes out and people generally agree it was good, I’ll accept it as such. Assuming it’ll suck for me would actually raise the chances that people view it as good, even it it’s okay.
Irrelevant. DHX has a much better track record than happy madison.
@Background Pony #1267
So you’re just going to assume it sucks and not account for the good spike episodes?
