I think the novelty and excitement wore off a long time ago. From what I’m told, however, it’s still a far friendlier place than some other fandoms. It’s still a bit of a culture shock for some folks.
That said, it’s okay for people to have different/negative opinions. I mean, honestly, I think it’s healthier to expect a wide variety of opinions on any given topic. It’s more important to learn how to discuss one’s differences, and learn how to politely ask people for their reasoning.
I mean, a lot of people still had a lot of intense, negative opinions even as far back as Season 1.
So, I guess if you want to tolerate people, and make it a friendlier place, learn how to take the time to understand other people’s reasoning. I promise you that if you’re patient enough, you can usually find out why anyone thinks the way they do. Too often, you tend to view dissenting opinions as an attack on you. It looks like you often take things a little too personally…you really need to not do that.
Anyway, once you’ve built up understanding, you can usually build up respect, too, and people who respect each other tend to be not to be quite as antagonistic to each other. It takes a lot of work, though, and not everyone is interested in talking to you. Sometimes it’s honestly easier to just let some people go. It’s okay for them to express themselves. (Don’t reply, in other words.)
