Sounds cool to me. I didn’t want to just send a one-word reply.
Probably, I was wondering since my dad is a quarter Native American. His grandmother was part of an actual Cherokee tribe!
I really have no idea whatsoever. Sure it could still be done though regardless if there are or not.
I wonder if there are enough true Native Americans left to practice it.
I’m not sure whether or not it’s still practiced that way, but yes?
Oh, I see, so if a man named John Hill married a Native American woman named Flying Dove, he would become John Dove Hill?
I read that the man would take part of the wife’s name as his own. I remembered it as “Surname” but I could be wrong about that.
But I thought Native American tribes didn’t really have surnames, they had names more like Singing Bird or Tall Snake or that sort of thing.
… Yes, except I made a mistake here; I meant that with Native American names it was the surname that was adopted. But for whatever reason in the show it’s still Apple all the way through. This isn’t well explained in the show.
Let’s see if I get what you’re saying, you’re saying that if Equestria names operate like Native American names, then Granny Smith’s name may have always been Apple Smith, she married a stallion, maybe named, I don’t know, Let’s say, Russet Yellow. Then Russet Yellow, married Apple Smith, who then took her first name, and became Russet Apple, who then had AJ’s mother, who also had the name Apple, who married AJ’s father, who then had Apple Bloom, Applejack and Big Macintosh, who all had the surname Apple, because of Russet Yellow and Apple Smith’s marriage. Is that right?
Either that or names in Equestria can go differently. Not just that but although it’s uncommon in America, men used to take their wife’s name in Native American tribes and Jack White also did the same thing.
But they’re the “Apple” family, that means her maiden name was Smith, and her married name was Apple, unless she’s AJ’s maternal grandmother. But maybe “Apple” Smith came from “Apple” family?
I’m not sure if her young name ever showed up officially or not but I did hear people referring to her as “Apple Smith”.
