If you hide it directly by selecting the eye icon on the top right then it would still display on the main page (but be hidden when searching). At that point, you will see the hide icon highlighted on the thumbnail the way that votes are.
 
However if you filter any of the tags in the featured image (you don’t even need to hide them just use the “spoiler” option) then it will not display on the main page anymore.
 
I tested this out of curiosity after a statement earlier on in the comments.
