@Jades
We only got to see one tiny piece of the puzzle though. There’s still a lot more.

I mean, what was Sunset’s backstory? She was a rich brat who wanted to be an alicorn because she wanted more power, Celestia said no, so she ran to the human world and took over a highschool…..for some reason, then stole the vital piece of Equestria’s major line of defense for more power. Now she’s one of the fandom’s favorites because the second film gave her depth and an actual characters, instead of a being a parody.

Discord did everything ten times worse than Starlight for fun.

And then our own characters have done some rather questionable things for what we believe to be small inconveniences, which ties into Lesson Zero’s lesson of the day.

So I found sympathy with her, especially since I know the writers will do her justice come season 6. I mean, they got me to stop hating Gilda and I thought I’d never get to like her. {Still more meh on her and I don’t care, but eh. She’s okay.}

The problem with this is this relies entirely on headcanon and she never even hinted at what you’re saying. If they showed that she at least tried in the very least then I’d feel her sympathetic backstory. Instead she doesn’t do anything. That’s not sympathetic in the slightest. I know people like it because it’s entirely Her fault but this is one of the cases I’d argue and outside force would be better.

@Jades
I didn’t think it contradicted itself. She was a child when it happened and contact with friends isn’t exactly easy, especially if Starlight was in a moving home, like I was so I wasn’t able to keep in contact with people I was close to because I was a child. Often times I could have, but as time went on, I got both scared of further rejection and the thought that they would have forgotten about me.

As well, that was just one snidbit. There’s plenty more that we don’t know and reasons for what happened and why she chose the path she did. So I found some depth and could see it just fine.

I…I actually have to agree with you there. =T

I don’t think the problem with Starlight’s backstory was the lack of fleshing out. It’s the lack of it making any sense alltogther.

It being a starting point was fine however the show is telling something different than what is shown. It says that Sunburst was her BFF but everything shown contradicts it hard. Is the show really going to expect me to believe that she didn’t even try to reconnect with him at all? That doesn’t sound like friends to me but the show honestly believes that so for that to be a starting point makes it lack any real depth whatsoever and Statlights actions began to lose there depth.

Then there’s the contradicting motivations her backstory provides. By the way her backstory explains her start it doesn’t make any sense for the equal mark to exist. It seems like the the problem comes from not being able to obtain your Cutie Mark at the same time not that it makes you superior to others. By that logic it shouldn’t have been Twilight who talked her out of it. It should’ve been the CMC. Of course their are other problems with her backstory but then I’ll just rant on.

Basically the problem with her backstory isn’t that her motivation is weak. It’s that it doesn’t make any sense and turns Starlight into a living plot hole. Basically she’s a Voodoo Shark .

The way you word it you make it sound like people thought actually thought this redemption is good. I don’t really think Starlight has depth what so ever. Her faith in her ideology and how quickly she gave up on it killed any depth she had.

Sadly it’s kinda true that Starlight didn’t have much hidden depth compared to some other villains. However at least from her POV, I do kinda understand why she did what she did. It’s that her backstory wasn’t fleshed out as well as Sombra’s backstory was.

Also reaction for this cruddy arc in general.

This story arc is complete garbage. Very rushed redemption for Sombra and storyline (and yet people gave Starlight Glimmer shite for her redemption), pointless villain team-up after the fact, Radiant Hope who is (unlike Starlight) very one-note and shows nearly no remorse for what she does (although I would’ve liked her character better if there were some internal conflict and/or hidden depths. Or even some charm into her character), and so forth. I’m very glad to not have continued reading the main issues in the MLP IDW comic series after the awful, confusing mirror arc storyline. >.<

I think Celestia is the Element of Patience.

What saved the day in the end? Love? Friendship?
Actually it was waiting long enough to get enough rincesses together to give Sombra a magic-resistant body.

If you consider how she handled basically every villain on the show just by waiting until better magic was avaliable, I think it’s fair to say that patience (and dillydallying) is the most powerful force.
