well that was an unexpected reaction, but it´s not that uncommon for works of fiction to end like that when you don´t want to follow the “happy ending” detour.
 
It´s not like the ending of the orignal “little mermaid” where she dies to protect his lover.

I can’t be the only one who laughed out loud when Celestia and Luna declared helping out, just because Twilight does so.

Well, the comics do have a precedent for that…  

A better ending: Hope follow Sombra to his dead, but instead she is fused together with him in a clear cristal where the red one was, sealing forever the umbrum and sharing an eternity with his love, all while she pays for her mistakes.

I’m the princess of the crystal empire you just saved from yourself  
it was your betrayal of evil smoke ponies that saved the day… from yourself  
if twilight is a believer then wait when the heck did we turn back from stone  
I would follow twilight anywhere, like that one time when she got me turned into stone.
