@eddmario: I don’t think Discord would have any reason to be released if Nightmare was ruling, though. Nightmare likely would have done to Discord what Sombra did to Amore, just to get him out of the way.

I just assumed it was would would have happened if every villain in the series never got stopped.  
In other words, Nightmare Moon would have been ruling when Discord got released, then the Changelings attacked Canterlot, then King Sombra and the Crystal Empire returned, then finally Tirek escaped from Tartarus.
