A little birdie told me that Lauren Faust got fired off of the upcoming Medusa animated film from Sony. Creative Differences was the reason. I am both shocked and saddened that this is happening. To quote from my brother ‘First Genndy is off of Popeye, now Lauren is off of Medusa? Cartoonists can’t seem to catch a break these days from bad management’.

So I guess animating the movie like the game would be the better choice
I see, that cutscene looks awesome.
Isn’t hand drawn more expensive than 3D?
My point wasn’t about pointing out how unimpressive the graphics were. Though by PS2 standards they were pretty much average compared to other games at the time. No, the point I wanted to make was that unless a huge amount of money is put behind it a 3D animated Dragon’s Lair will not hope to match the visual fair of the original game. A near impossible feet even if given an average big industry budget. Speaking of which…
A Disney film usually has a million dollars behind. Actually, several million dollars. Like, the average budget of an animated Disney film is now at least over $150 million. And the budget just seems to be climbing. Dreamworks films also between $100-150 million mark. Most other animation studios outside those two also working in the millions. All of this is for 3D animated films. If Dragon’s Lair the Movie gets picked up, it will also have millions of dollars to work with, but I doubt it will ever go up that high.
Heck, it would be lucky if it was given a budget that is close to a $100 million. Even Disney rarely does that for their hand drawn movies. Which definitely says a lot about how crazy expensive 3D animation can be. Dragon’s Lair won’t probably need a $100 million to succeed anyway. Don Bluth made plenty of great movies for far less.
Dragon’s Lair 3D is 13 years old
And how much is a Disney level budget?
What? It would be the same story
I think I recall him saying that too, but it always felt to me that Bluth wasn’t too invested in that idea. They were setting off to make a movie adaption of something they made using hand drawn animation. So anything that wasn’t hand drawn didn’t stood a chance.
@Seiya-Meteorite
Agreed. And strangely enough, the game Dragon’s Lair 3D is proof of that. Not just because it uses 3D modeling or anything. No. What I am referring to is some of the animated cutscenes in the game. Brand new animation that was not part of the original game, but were created for 3D. The first cutscene alone would have made for a great intro to the first game and actually shed some more light on the story of Dragon’s Lair. Click Here to Watch
That intro had a lot of detail and movement to it. It is very well animated and well put together. Compared to the rest of Dragon’s Lair 3d… Yeah… Unless Don Bluth is getting a Disney level budget, 3D will fail utterly.
Were you replying to me?
What? I wasn’t trying to insult you or anything.
Because…I dunno. I don’t work at Nick.
On the plus side, they gave bigger roles to Sandy and Squidward instead of pushing them aside like the first film did.
Yes, I saw the movie.
In 3D.
Leave me alone.
I’m not too keen on the CGI for that film. They used 2D for the real world in the first film, so why not in the second?
Actually, the SpongeBob movie from this year used 2D animation for the “underwater” segments, then switched to CG animation for the characters in the real world.
Really? I don’t think 3D would do justice to the story.
Fun fact he was considering 3D
I agree…I think the reason I used that gif is because the last time we’ve seen traditional animation was in 2011…and it’s nearly dead nowadays.
It really shouldn’t be all that surprising. Don Bluth has always worked on traditionally animated projects. I would find it far more strange if he wanted to do a 3D animated film when 2D is his strong suit. Even with the best CGI in the world, 3D models will never be able to match the expressive emotions seen in Bluth’s characters.
Hooray!!
Ew.
I think the Nostalgia Critic said it’s going to be hand drawn.
But personally I don’t care how it’s animated
I hope the Dragon’s Lair film is done in 2D hand drawn animation :D
Lauren is hardly old enough to retire from animation. She is not even in her fifties or sixties yet. Which is hardly even retiring age when it comes to making art. Heck, even Don Bluth is getting back into animation with the making of the Dragon’s Lair Movie! And that guy is ooooooooooooooooold! So no. I disagree with the notion of Lauren considering retirement because that is absolutely a ridiculous thing to do.
If anything, Lauren should take a break from working with big business. They seem to be swimming in the shallow end of the think tank as of late. Maybe do an independent project or something. Maybe even create a movie for Milky Way and the Galaxy Girls. With “Them’s Fightin’ Herds”, Lauren had expressed a possible interest in doing more gaming related projects. Something with less creative restrictions, ya’know? At the very least get something out there because aside from “Them’s Fightin’ Herds”, there hasn’t been anything new from her for awhile. Well. There was Medusa… but… yeah.
I see…but I think MLP has done a good combination of both.
I know, I know.
