Why? Why can I not say no? Such is a great question for the philosophers of our time.
Would you like to join us? C’mon in: The water’s fine!
Full of the souls of the damned, but the more the merrier! =D
That was from Shadow? Huh, alright then.
Okay, somebody referenced the “Y’know what they say–the more the merrier!” line from Shadow. That led to a brief spat of memorable quotes. Then I mentioned how he was an actual threat in SA2 compared to other games. ShimmeringStallion mentioned that was about when the problems started, and then I did a filibuster of analysis, then another and another. I think that about sums it up.
Kinda hard to tell what Boom is supposed to be. It’s supposed to be a whole different franchise, yet so far it seems to be all Sega’s focusing on–is it any wonder I thought it was a reboot, since ever since Rise of Lyric came out, all the major releases have been Boom focused? And you’d think after the abject failure of Rise of Lyric, they’d stop making Boom games at least, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
I’ll give one point to the TV show’s favor. It really reminded me in the couple episodes I saw as a sort of spiritual successor to AoStH. Sure, it doesn’t have the very loose and very crazy animation, but the way many episodes seem to focus on Eggman more than Sonic (much like how Looney Tunes would focus on the Coyote’s attempts to catch the Road Runner) and the emphasis on just being funny and fun over all else is refreshing. Then again, AoStH was also running opposite SatAM, and Boom doesn’t have that counterpoint. But that’s just nitpicking. The Boom Eggman is fine enough, I suppose (I do have to watch the whole show so far to make sure, though,) but I don’t know, something about the Boom portrayal doesn’t work for me the same way previous portrayals have. Can’t put my finger on why.
Sonic Boom is meant to be a different franchise… and I actually found him genuinely hilarious in the one episode I’ve seen of the Sonic Boom show, “Next Top Villain”.
Honestly it didn’t get really bad until Shadow the Hedgehog, where he felt largely pointless and only in the game because, well, it’s Robotnik and he has to be in there somewhere. Sonic ‘06 was a step in the right direction; he wasn’t played for comedy at all, and, although easy to mock in execution, his more realistic design is not one I object to in theory.
What really sinks it is how obvious it is that Mike Pollack is trying to imitate the kind of performance Deem Bristow might’ve given (especially prevalent in Shadow; Pollack is no Bristow) and how useless he is to the story. The only thing his involvement adds to the story, is that it’s thanks to his faux-Egg Carrier being a shoddily built piece of scrap that it leads to Elise’s death, causing the Bad Future. That’s it. His whole “awaken the Flames of Disaster” thing is just an excuse for that to happen. Weaaaaaaak.
He was nearly perfect in Sonic Unleashed; closest we’ll probably ever get to the SA days–a threatening enemy (sucker nearly friggin’ blew up the whole world, for Pete’s sake) and still managing to be legitimately funny. Still the best performance Pollack’s given as the character, imo. From Colors on, though, the bite begins to go away, until, by Sonic Boom, it just makes me sad. Really really sad.
then proceeds to get caught up in a situation where he is forced to help in saving the Earth
Actually, I think that was riiiiight after the problems started. But regardless…
@ShimmeringStallion
The third strike is what counts, yes, it was that the third strike is what counts, is what they say.
Muaaahahaa! Citizens of Earth! Lend me your ears and listen to me very carefully! My name is Dr. Eggman, the world’s greatest scientist–and soon to be the world’s greatest ruler! From this moment forward, you are all citizens of the Great Eggman Empire! Now, witness the beginning of the greatest empire of all time! Muaaahahaahaa!
(proceeds to blow up half the friggin’ Moon, because back in those days, he was an actual threat and not a hapless ineffectual putz like nowadays)
All his machines, are made for destruction, he will build, HIS EM-PIE-YUGH!
I’ll show you what real evil is!
Take thisTake this! Take thisTake this! CHAAAAAARGE!
Get a load o~~, Get a load o~~, Get a load of this.

Always look on the bight side of XK-class end of the world scenarios…
To be fair, however… the mousse was delicious, even IF the customer never got to try any before they died.
“Brownie, order up! One chocolate mousse!
“Got it!”
