While some critiqued the episode had the same problem as MMC, “having way to many events crammed into a musical episode,” I think this episode did a better job conveying events then MMC did, had better pacing, and overall was more touching/adorable/satisfying.
It was also surprisingly less comical then most CMC episodes, (having fewer visual gags, and such) and felt a lot more serious then the usual CMC episode.
Also, the CMC’s “Ascension” felt like it had more build-up then Twilight’s, which made it feel more satisfying, and heart-warming to me.
The CMC have been working to get their marks for nearly 5 years/seasons, and finally earned them doing something very least-expected. Helping out their worst bully. Which also makes it feel more well-earned.
As someone who, to put it mildly, reeeaally didn’t like MMC, I found this episode to be way more tolerable in regards to what they did and how and why they did it.

With that and the grand lights show (compare to the much more subdued CM-getting effect in “The Cutie Mark Chronicles) I thought some grand… something… was coming.
Not that this wasn’t grand. But y’know, it looked grander.
Well, the whole episode did feel like a microcosm of MMC, what with the theme, transformation, ending celebration, and even the fact that it was a musical.
