For me, the nadir of the comics has to be the 2014 Holiday Special, which in addition to its various plot holes and other glaring omissions is just mean-spirited. It seems to exist for no other reason other than to make Sunset suffer and everyone else look like jerks.

Well if you are going to make the claim that Chrysalis had to slowly subdue them, beginning to do so before we even saw them on screen, then we can just as easily say the changelings began invading Ponyville earlier than the night they grabbed the CMC.
 
And like you are claiming, if the symptoms don’t happen until later, then the Ponies of Ponyville could have spent a good chunk of the day of the CMC abduction being slowly controlled without any outward signs until the next morning.

The bridesmaids where there before the mane six showed up. So like I said, it seems they had just about as much contact as Shining, and their outward signs of being controlled showed up around the same time his did.

Didn’t the bridesmaids have at most a few hours of exposure? They are normal one minute, then on the evening of later that same day the mane 6 are given the job, meaning the bridesmaids have already been hypnotized and sent to the caves. Only a few hours later.
 
The changelings in the comic grabbed the CMC the night before, so they had several hours overnight to invade (which would certainly be the best time of day to be stealthy).
