Well, judging those who are different to you to be inferior or “folks we do not mingle with” is one aspect of racism. Lazy stereotypes are certainly another, and boo to all of those too! They’re both common human weaknesses that make one vulnerable to the real disease: becoming a tool in the perpetuation of unfair power structures at any cost.
Othering and lazy generalizations are flaws we all share, flaws we can actually work around; but they’re flaws that are too easily exploited by the cynical, evil, or merely powerful.
The show is getting more sophisticated with its portrayal of non-pony peoples, I feel. It kinda better had for this season. I’m getting a sense of more than (quadruped with a history in an area) + (hat from that area) + (funny accent) being the entirety of a character’s culture, at least.
Yeah, maybe it was the horns that got me to think that.
Ironically, IRL vikings never even wore those stereotypical hats with horns.
They didn’t seem Viking at all, more Mongolian than anything else.
EAT WITH YOUR MOUTH
EEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTT
Yeah, the “Don’t treat foreigners as, foreigners” bit is a pretty clever, and deep lesson. The Yaks seemed a bit unpleasable, and unruly at first, but they ended up being pretty cool in the end.
I actually remember some complained that S1’s “Bridle Gossip” was a “racist episode,” yet the ep’ was basically against racism, or judging others who are different from you.
There is an underlying lesson in this episode.
Don’t treat foreigners as, foreigners. Treat them like they are part of the community and they may feel welcome. The Mane 6 had been trying to imitate Yak culture based on text book assumptions, which I imagine could have pissed the Yaks off. The episode ended well with Equestrians introducing the Yaks to Equestrian way of partying, which the Yaks appreciated.
You win.

Oy vey… How is it “racist,” dare I ask? I don’t think the Yakistan Yaks were meant to represent any particular real life culture/country. They seemed kinda based off the vikings a bit, and some other things in minor ways, but overall were quite fictional, and not really generalizing any particular IRL culture in a “racist” way.
Also, the somewhat xenophobic “murica” remark kinda hurts your P.C.-ness a bit. Try harder.
Yeah, think of all the yaks they’ve insulted with their sweeping generalizations!
I know she’s still Twilight, don’t get me wrong. (Just spoofing the old “Twilight Mary-Su” dramas.) Yes, I saw her “Twilight Snapple” bits, and it was glorious. Pinkie was also getting a bit snappy too.
The ep’ oddly gave me a “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” vibe for some reason, which is a good thing, considering Lauren Faust used to write stories for that show. (And like PPG it was made by her husband.)
She’s still Twilight.
Did you see Twilight on the verge of snapping in today’s episode?

…someone needs to make a cart with quesadillas for wheels.
Hmm, I almost want to try that now. But Twilight would strike me down the moment I attempt to add cheddar to the first pancake!
To be fair, I don’t think cheese goes well with pancakes. Cream cheese, maybe, but not actual sliced/shredded cheese.
WHAT IS THIS PLACE?!
Fresh out, sir.
